Changing the Skin Texture

This is something a lot of people have asked about, not sure why I still haven't put it up but here it is! How to swap to a different texture on one of the rigs.

This is a fairly simple and straightforward process. First off, select the model. Not the rig but the actual mesh. Next go into the texture tab and go down to where it says Image.

Click on the X to get rid of the texture, and then hit the Open button to open up your new texture. That's it, however, you won't see a change in the 3D viewport because Blender is a poop. Open up the UV Image editor and go into edit mode with your model. Select all of the geometry with A, and select your new texture from the menu.

This will update your texture in the viewport. You'll have to do it again for the head because it's a separate object. That's about it!

  1. Thank you soooooo much for uploading this. I'm pretty new to Blender and I have always been a huge fan of how your animations looked. I was just thinking to myself "dang I wish I could change the skin of the rig so I could use different characters, especially if I do voice overs". I almost didn't think I would have been able to have figured it out! I'm sure a ton of people will be using your rig now! Thanks again and I can't wait to see any of the new animations you put out in the future!

  2. Thanks!!! Your tutorials really helped me!!! I'm releasing my animations in YouTube soon! Also, could you make a tutorial on how to make a group folder so when I link it, it is on one file, not like on append, you have to select all mesh and armature. Thanks though!

    1. That's something you could look up on blender wiki or wherever if you want more details. To make a group though select all your objects and hit ctrl+g, then you can rename it in the object settings. Grouped have a green outline.

    1. It's part of the topology I created for the head. Select the head and go into edit mode to see how it's modeled.

    2. Did you also make a topology for the body. If so did you then make bones for the body so you could make the body move?

    3. Yes, I made special cuts and subdivisions for the body which adhered to the bones so it would deform properly.

    1. Right click on the model, you might have to do it a few times if the rig is getting in the way.

  8. How did you link the things in the face panel to the things on the rig? (sorry for bad english) thanks

    1. The bones on the face panel act as drivers for the shape keys on the mesh. Their location increases the influence on the shape keys thus enabling all those deformations. These tutorials explain it really well:

  9. Hey, fairly new to Blender but really enjoying working with your rig. I want to know how to duplicate it so that I can have two characters each with their own skins. I can duplicate the rig, but when I change skins with the duplicate selected they both change... I think I'm missing something stupid but I thought Id ask the expert ;)

    1. i decided to help so what you do is you save the rig but with 2 different names example: rig1,rig2 then you go into the toolbar and hit file there is should say append then you go into the rig2 file
and select object then you choose all the objects and append them
remember if you did not understand (append append append)
btw i think you can hit ctrl+f1 to append

  11. Would it be possible for you to make a female rig? Using female skins on the current rig makes them really weird, they still look kinda maleish.

    1. You can go into edit mode with the model and remove the texture from the eyes through the UV editor, that'll make them white again.

  17. Hello, i have a huge problem. My character goes completely black on the rig.
To make sure i have not done anything wrong, i tried to open the rig, not do anything with it, only hit Shift + A to get a camera, hit F12 and see the render but it's just black. What am i doing wrong?
